How They Met
Their love story was something out of a TV ad for online matchmaking services. Minh moved to the Northern Virginia area in May 2005, with the expectation of enjoying her independence and freedom while concentrating on her new job. Two weeks after settling into her new surroundings, there was a serendipitous moment that would forever change her and Robert’s lives. On Monday, May 23, 2005, Robert sent an introductory message to Minh on Myspace because he was intrigued by her profile. She then replied to the message by asking Robert for his AOL screen name so they could chat online. Despite Minh’s best effort to decipher Robert’s cryptic messages for 15 minutes, she was exasperated with Robert’s spelling and grammatical errors and decided to give him her phone number instructing him to call her. After a brief talk on the phone, Minh suggested that they both meet in person that day. Robert recommended a cute Vietnamese restaurant, unbeknownst to Robert that this was a “date.” After dinner, they decided to go see a movie and ended the delightful “date” with hopes to see each other again. Since that one fine day in May, Minh and Robert spent almost every day together. It was indeed a match made in virtual reality.
